What brought us together
2001: A Space Odyssey, the movie.
We met while working at the university during our doctoral research in political science. As academic staff, we were not only immersed in research; teaching was also part of our everyday work. That year, we were assigned to teach European integration theories, a highly abstract subject that’s often difficult to make engaging for students. So we took a rather unusual approach: start each complex theory with a movie. We turned to 2001: A Space Odyssey to explore how every step builds on what came before. Today, we might as well use it to spark a conversation about AI alignment.
We bonded over a shared question:
How do you explain complex things in ways that feel easy, intuitive, and even fun?
We found our answer in storytelling, analogy, visual arts, and experiential learning.
These methods still shape how we work and what we believe in.

We began our careers in research: one in communication and media studies, the other in European integration and rule of law. From there, we moved into applying our results: Linda co-trained an AI model to counter online hate speech, while Luana built a series of algorithms that help assess compliance and democratic resilience in Europe. Now, with Sustainability Experience Lab, we take the next step from applied research into action.
We know we’re working in a time of sustainability fatigue, when many are tired of the topic and hesitant to engage. But we believe this moment needs new approaches, ones that spark curiosity, lower barriers, and make complexity feel accessible. That’s why we combine experiential formats with responsible AI. Not as a clash of buzzwords, but as part of how we see sustainable development: as including social responsibility, digital literacy, human-centered design and mindful innovation.
